Paul Newman Rolex Daytona

In 1979, Paul Newman took second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 935 with co-drivers Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen. This race was the inspiration for this drawing of Paul Newman’s legendary Rolex Daytona, a tribute to King Cool and his watch.

The time is set at 9:35 for the car driven. Other details include the 79′ Porsche Le Mans poster graphic overlay on the bund strap, 70 for the number on the side of the Porsche and a tiny Le Mans racetrack to the left of 70.

I had the great fortune to exhibit this piece at the Phillips’ Winning Icons auction Fall 2017 and the even greater fortune of wearing Paul Newman’s Rolex for a hot minute!
